Ms. Adey joined the Breck Community halfway through last year, but she has already claimed two prominent community roles: a History teacher and the Varsity Girls Lacrosse Coach. Ms. Adey first started playing lacrosse her freshman year of high school and quickly fell in love with the fast pace and the team aspect of the game. She knew she would stick with lacrosse for a long time. Forced to decide between playing lacrosse or soccer in college, Ms. Adey ultimately chose to play lacrosse for Lehigh University. After college, she continued her lacrosse journey coaching for many teams. Her favorite part of coaching lacrosse is building a space for teenagers to continue athletics. Ms. Adey believes that athletes are very important in helping create lifelong skills: building resilience through the highs and lows and experiencing failure are two big examples. Ms. Adey’s coaching style has been influenced by many of her past coaches, whether she got along with them or not. Motivating athletes and building a cohesive team is a huge part of her coaching style. Ms. Adey likes to ask her players a lot of questions and get their input instead of just assigning them drills to do. She believes in player participation in all levels of the game. When asked what piece of advice she would give her high school self, she thoughtfully replied, you don’t have to love your sport every day, you can love something and hate it the next day and there’s nothing wrong with you or with that. She would remind her young self that to always accomplish and be better everyday is simply not sustainable, in sports and also in life. It’s a great reminder for all Breck students. There’s a lot of pressure to be perfect in sports and in life. But Ms. Adey’s coaching and teaching style is challenging that expectation and encouraging us all to buy in and be more gentle with ourselves. It sounds like Breck Girls Lacrosse, and her classroom, are teed up to be inclusive and joyful spaces. Welcome Ms Adey, and game on!
