Taylor Allison Swift is a singer songwriter powerhouse who has dominated the music industry for decades. This past week, Swift has been dominating headlines. Swift had a remarkable night at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) recently, adding to her impressive list of accolades. She won big, taking home seven awards out of her twelve nominations. Swift’s victories in video and artist of the year further solidify her status as one of the leading artists in the music scene. From the VMA awards to the first Chiefs NFL game — a platform that Swift has been at the center of while supporting her boyfriend, tight end Travis Kelce — the world has had a front row seat into the inner workings of her mind.
But, perhaps most notably, Swift took a public stance regarding the upcoming election.
On Tuesday, September 10th, Swift (or “Childless Cat Lady”) publicly endorsed Democratic Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz. Although this is not the first time Swift has taken a political stance via social media, many believe that her opinion and voice matter heavily in the upcoming election, due to her immense influence over her fanbase. Speaking from her personal beliefs, Swift articulates that she will be voting for Madame Vice President Harris because “she is a steady-headed gifted leader and [she believes that] we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.” Swift also supports Harris’s views on LGBTQIA+ rights, IVF, and women’s rights.
Swift is fully aware of the power she holds over so many young voters, a demographic that both candidates are looking to secure because of their potential influence this November. Some question the timing and quality of her endorsement, but most can agree that Swift’s post could sway important voters. With over 400,000 people registering to vote in the November election following her endorsement, it is hard to deny the impact that Taylor Swift’s voice holds.
