On February 24th, 2022, the Russian Federation launched a full, large-scale attack on Ukraine, further expanding the conflict that has been ongoing since the annexation of Crimea in 2014. While Russia has been playing the “offensive” in this war, holding onto about 20% of Ukrainian territory, Ukraine has proven that it can turn the tables in the conflict.
On August 6th, 2024, Ukrainian forces launched a massive incursion into Russia’s Kursk Oblast, occupying and holding some of its territory. This became the most significant attack on the border since Russia’s initial invasion in 2022. The future of the war remains uncertain, as Putin claims that Russia is “prepared to ‘use all means’ to protect Russian territory”. This heavily implies the use of nuclear weapons, as he has threatened their use in the past.
This unpredictable war between Russia and Ukraine has reached a critical point as Ukraine advances into Russian territory. Although it may seem like it, there are many ways we can help. For example, donating to a cause that supports the fight for Ukraine and voting for a candidate in this upcoming election who will support Ukraine’s fight against Russia are two ways to get involved. But for now, the future remains uncertain and the focus must be on finding a peaceful resolution to prevent a greater catastrophe in Europe.
