As a new Breck school year begins, The Breck Bugle editors have been hard at work preparing for another season of articles written by our very own student body. With the fall leaves beginning to touch the ground, football and soccer games starting up again, and summer’s end, it is time for a new term filled with Bugle writers, both new and old. In order for our readers to have a little more information on the Bugle team and our plans for the upcoming year, this article will serve as an introduction to the Breck Bugle’s 2024-2025 editors and newly appointed faculty advisor.
- Senior editor #1 – Catherine Walker
As a very involved and active member of Breck’s community, Catherine became an editor during her junior year and has continued to pursue her role with a sense of commitment and dedication throughout the past year. According to Catherine, she is most excited to start a new section on updates on SDIC and CAC. “I think this will be extremely helpful for people to see the behind-the-scenes of what students do on these councils. I’m also excited to work with the other editors and Mr. Daniel. We have a great group of people who are very hard workers and I’m pumped to see what the year has in store,” Catherine said. Additionally, Catherine’s favorite article to write has been the sports category. Having been at Breck for her entire life, she finds watching as well as playing sports to be something she is super passionate about. Catherine’s favorite Breck tradition is Homecoming Court. She said, “Since I was a kid, I have looked forward to that day all year. The vibes, emotions, and happy people all around bring me so much joy.” In conclusion, Catherine’s goal for the Bugle leading into the 2024-2025 school year is to have issues coming out tri-weekly. “I want to see many students participate. And it starts with YOU!” she added enthusiastically. All in All, Catherine looks forward to the start of a new term and feels confident that the Bugle will have another successful year.
- Senior editor #2 – Matea Homan
After joining the Breck Bugle during my sophomore year, I’ve found that it is one of my favorite ways to interact with people in the Breck community. I came to Breck in ninth grade, and the older students I met on the Bugle were great mentors to me and inspired me to become a mentor for my younger peers. I’m looking forward to beginning a new project in collaboration with Student Diversity & Leadership council, a group I am a part of, and to give frequent updates on the council’s projects and work. My favorite article to write has always been the “Breck life” category, as it allows me to interview my teachers and peers, while also learning about what is happening outside of the classroom at Breck. My favorite Breck tradition would have to be Homecoming, because it is a week full of school spirit where the upper school can come together and celebrate the start of a new year at Breck. This year, my hope for the Breck Bugle is to build a legacy that I will be proud of to leave behind when I have graduated next year. I want to engage with the younger writers, while also making sure that the Bugle grows in terms of variety of articles being written. Alongside that, I would love to make sure that the Bugle’s future team of editors is full of dedicated, passionate students who love to write as much as me and my fellow editors do.
- Senior editor #3 – Bee Kern
A soccer captain and new editor for the Bugle, Bee has proved her ability to help lead the school newspaper through her avid writing and passion for the club. This will be her sixth year at Breck, and she’s feeling ready to step into her new role. “I’m excited to see what everyone chooses to write about for their articles,” Bee said. “It gives me a small sense of what is important to each writer.” Bee personally loves to write about current events and sports. “They’re topics that make me excited to write!” she exclaimed. In addition to having been at Breck for a long time now, Bee has found that her favorite Breck tradition is singing the Alma Mater because it is unique to our school and it shows the unity of Breck. As for goals, Bee hopes to find people who will be more consistent writers for the Bugle. She looks forward to the start of a new year and engaging with the community through her writing and leadership skills.
- Senior editor #4 – Patrick Eyres
As a new addition to the Bugle’s editing team, Patrick has already stepped up with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. Along with being a part of the Breck Voterama group and playing on the soccer team, Patrick spent last year writing several articles with consistency and hard work. “I’m excited to help Upper School students write about what they’re passionate about and discover their inner journalist,” he said. Patrick enjoys writing articles about student life and current events impacting Breck students. After being at Breck for fourteen years, Patrick says that his favorite Breck tradition is Homecoming week: “I love the atmosphere, sports games, and school spirit.” By the end of the year, he hopes that the Breck Bugle will be the go-to place for Breck students to learn about a wide variety of topics, ranging from school-specific issues to national news. He feels ready for the start of a new year and is ready to assist younger writers and help them improve their skills.
- Junior Editor #1– Benny Marmor
Benny has been a loyal writer for the Bugle through his high school years, proving his readiness to become an editor for the 2024-2025 school year. As a student with a real passion for journalism and the Bugle, Benny looks forward to seeing if there are ways to write more articles that students are interested in reading. “My favorite kind of article to write is student life, because I feel like those kinds of articles are the most relevant for our audience,” Benny commented. Benny came to Breck in ninth grade and found the Breck Bugle to be an entertaining and rewarding experience, and he hopes to continue to make the Bugle a fun and engaging space for students in the next year. “My favorite Breck tradition is homecoming week because it is always fun to see the cool costumes people have!” Benny said. Ultimately, Benny’s goal for the Bugle this year is to achieve a consistent publishing rate of our print issues and continue to publish efficiently on the website. He is prepared to take on this new leadership role with positivity and passion.
- Junior Editor #2 – Pearl Perry
Pearl will be joining as a junior editor after her semester away. Expect more on her starting second semester.
Our New Faculty Advisor: Mr. Daniel
We are grateful and excited to welcome Mr. Daniel as our new faculty advisor for the 2024-2025 school year! Mr. Daniel attended Breck School as a student, and has now been working here as a teacher in the History department for four years. Mr. Daniel’s passion for journalism began in high school, where he liked to write op-eds about updating student traditions to be more inclusive. “In college, I wrote a column about the politics of teaching while I was studying to become a teacher. Now, my job is to help with whatever you want to write!” he said. For his favorite Breck tradition, Mr. Daniel has an appreciation for senior speeches. Like the newspaper, it’s a place where classmates and teachers get to hear you talk about what you want to talk about. It’s a chance to see you in a new light,” he concluded. Mr. Daniel also feels excited to see what students want to write about. He believes that, “authoring one’s first article or starting a column is a unique opportunity to develop your voice outside of the confines of a class assignment.” He also added that it can result in a real moment in growth. Thinking of goals, Mr. Daniel hopes to have a solid team of sophomores and juniors ready to step into leadership and take over from this year’s juniors and seniors. “If you start coming to meetings and getting involved now, this could be you next year,” Mr. Daniel encouraged students. Thank you, Mr. Daniel, for taking on this role with our team. We are looking forward to a great year!
Overall, this year’s 2024-2025 Bugle Editing Team is ready for another season of passionate writers who hope to uplift Breck’s community through their skills. If you have any interest in writing, reporting, or journalism at all, contact one of the editors or Mr. Daniel for information on how to get involved!
