On Tuesday, September 24, 2024, Breck parents received an email about Breck’s potential purchase of the American Legion’s Chester Bird, a local restaurant and charitable gambling destination dedicated to supporting veterans. This news was spread to students and suddenly, it was the discussion of the week. This attempt at purchasing the legion has been forty years in the making, spanning multiple head-of-school tenures. Dr. Hernàndez described the reasons behind this desire to purchase the Legion as being that it would make the entry and exit of Breck easier and give Breck more options to expand and build. The purchase is finally within sight, but this purchase is not completed and may not be completed until May. Furthermore, because Breck runs on an operating budget that goes to zero at the end of every year (or, in other words, every dollar that goes into Breck is spent), Dr. Hernàndez foresees a long process to truly have this property be used for Breck. In the meantime, Dr. Hernández wants Breck to dream. Students began asking questions after parents spread the word, which is exactly what Dr. Hernández hoped Breck would do. There is no concrete plan for what the Legion building would become, making it so exciting. It is an opportunity for faculty, staff, administration, and students to dream alike and think about the possibilities in store for Breck. This is a chance for Breck students to realize that we are a part of the history and future of Breck. As Dr. Hernàndez puts it, “People will look back and say, ‘Oh my gosh, you were a junior when they acquired the Legion,’ right? You’re an important part of what will be Breck in 50 years.” So, as Breck students, it is up to us to dream big and look to what the future holds for our school.
