Inspired by the election, we are trying something new with this issue: a vote by you! We would love to hear what you, the Breck student body, teachers, and administration, think! Is Breck’s AI policy too strict, too lenient, or just right? Scan the QR Code above or click the link here and let us know. We will publish the results of the poll, along with any comments you have!
As we go into finals, many of us have been hearing about Breck’s AI use policy. Taking up approximately one page of the student handbook, the main point of the policy is that students should not use AI for any work unless they have a teacher’s explicit permission. The policy also states that any work that uses AI should have a citation acknowledging the help. The policy explicitly includes tools such as ChatGPT, Google Translate, and Gemini.
Some say that the hard-to-enforce policies are not worth it, as students don’t generally abide by them, and the ones that do are disadvantaged for following the rules. Additionally, they say that the policies are harming students; if school is meant to prepare students for life, then preventing them from using tools that they will use in the workplace is counterintuitive. According to them, we should be having an AI class, instead of Mustang Block, or next to English on the schedule!
