A week into 2025, Canadian Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau resigned as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, after 11 years in the Liberal Party and 9 years as PM of Canada. It’s a key loss for the Canadian government, as Trudeau is widely regarded as an influential PM who has led the country for over a decade. The Canadian Parliament is suspended until March 24 while a new PM is being chosen. Trudeau remains the incumbent Prime Minister while a new PM is chosen.
During his resignation press conference, Trudeau declared, “This country deserves a real choice in the next election and it has become clear to me that I’m having to fight internal battles. I cannot be the best option in that election.” Liberal Party President Sachit Mehra has said that he will be sitting down with colleagues to find a new PM of Canada in the coming months. On Trudeau’s legacy, Mehra said, “Liberals across the country Trudeau are so grateful to Justin Trudeau for more than a decade of leadership to our party and the country. He will be missed.”
Canada has been facing a mounting set of challenges, including economic struggles and Trump’s tariffs enacted on Canada. Trudeau has faced criticism that he hasn’t done enough to quell these issues, and many Canadians expected more from him. Trudeau’s key allies, such as NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystlla Freeland, lost confidence in Trudeau’s ability to handle the economy. This was ultimately the final straw before Trudeau’s resignation.
In Trudeau’s final months as Prime Minister, he needs to focus on relationships with foreign countries to improve Canada’s struggling economy.
