As the winter sports regular season comes to an end and we start moving into section and state tournaments, we decided to summarize teams’ seasons and share some highlights.
Boys Basketball:
The boys basketball team concluded the season with a commendable record of 16-10, clinching the IMAC Conference Championship in a game against their rival, Blake. As they head into the section tournament, they are riding a wave of momentum having won 6 out of their last 7 games. The team is performing exceptionally well and is determined to defend both their section and state titles. Fueled by the impressive scoring of IMAC Player of the Year Miles Newton (’25) and DeAngelo Dungey (’26), they are determined to secure a second consecutive state championship.
Girls Basketball:
The girls basketball season came to an end on February 27th at the hands of Dassel-Cokato, with their final record being 11-14. They fought hard but ultimately fell short and could not keep up with the Chargers of Dassel-Cokato. Captain Catherine Walker (‘25) led the team in scoring averaging 17.5 points per game. With only 3 seniors graduating, the team’s future is bright!
Boys Hockey:
The boys hockey team’s season ended on February 19th at the hands of rival Providence Academy in the Class 1A, Section 2 Quarterfinal. The final score was 2-5 in favor of the Lions. Despite a slow start, the Mustangs battled until the very end, as Nick Downing (‘26) and George MacBean (‘26) scored in the final period. Despite the tough loss, the Mustangs showcased their determination and grit, setting the stage for a promising season ahead.
Girls Hockey:
The girls hockey team had a remarkable season, concluding with an impressive record of 17-7 and winning the IMAC Conference. Unfortunately, their journey came to an unexpected halt in the Class 1A, Section 5 Semifinal, where they faced Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian and narrowly lost 1-2. Having previously defeated this team earlier in the season, it felt almost certain that the Mustangs would emerge victorious in this match. As is often the case in sports, beating the same team twice is a tough challenge. With captains Madison Dovenberg (’26), Torrin Luoma (’26), and Casey Moos (’26) at the helm, the team is well-positioned for a bright future.
Boys Swim & Dive:
The Breck/Blake swim and dive team is on a roll once again. After the conclusion of the section meet at St. Catherine’s College on February 28th, they were once again crowned as section champions. The BearStangs look to continue the dominance they have maintained over the years and end up with another state title.
Alpine Skiing:
Alpine finished their season with Sections at Wild Mountain. Although none of them advanced to state, the boys and girls still performed well. The boys placed 10th in sections, while the girls placed 7th out of 18 teams on both sides. The Alpine team is on an upward trajectory and hopes to qualify for state next year.
Nordic Skiing:
The Nordic ski team had a strong season, with standout performances from individual athletes. Senior Josh Frett continued his success, building on his past state and national-level achievements. Esme Gulbransen (‘25) secured a spot at the state meet after an impressive fifth-place finish in the Section 6 championships. While team rankings weren’t widely reported, Breck remained competitive in Minnesota’s high school nordic skiing scene.
Gymnastics:
Breck Gymnastics shattered all expectations coming into this season. This team persevered through challenges and ended up setting a new scoring record at 143.575, the previous record had been unbroken since 2009! Then the team went on to qualify for state on their home turf, and in state, the team put on an exceptional performance earning them 3rd Place. To go along with the team’s success, Jessie Strecker was named Section 4A Head Coach of the Year. This season was historic, but don’t expect the team to rest on their success—they’ll be aiming for first place next year!
Mock Trial:
The realest sport of them all had an excellent season. Rookies to the program Colin Mitchell (‘25) and Jaylen Gebeck (‘25) had amazing seasons winning 2 Most Outstanding Witness Awards a piece. Captain Graham Bailey (‘25) was awarded the MVP award, while Avital Krebs (‘26) was awarded the Maya Tester Professionalism Award. The team unfortunately did not make it to state, but the future looks bright for Breck Mock Trial.
With winter sports in the books, the Mustangs have plenty to be proud of as they set their sights on the next season, with bigger goals ahead.
