The Boys Volleyball Team had an electric inaugural season last spring. Although the year wasn’t filled with many wins, there were many positive moments and things to grow from.
Self-proclaimed Eternal President Misha Sostek has very high hopes for this year’s season. Never having played volleyball before, Sostek saw this potential team as an opportunity to try something new and create new opportunities for others. When asked about last season, Sostek admitted, “we didn’t do very well last year. But, you know, we had a lot of fun”. He acknowledged that not many spring sports were out there, and he wanted something fun and different to excite potential prospective players.
When asked about the team’s strengths, Sostek only had ‘one’ word for me: “Resilience. Even when we were down, we could always keep playing”. Never steering away from a challenge will surely help this team’s chemistry and bond heading into this upcoming season. Although individual talent was apparent, the team’s real strength lies in their unity and ability to play as a cohesive unit.
Junior outside hitter Jasper Thompson shared with me, “Playing volleyball has changed my perspective on life. When I began this journey, it was hard for me to lose. But this has taught me that there are many steps to success, one of them being the ability to lose”. There is no doubt that the qualities that playing boys’ volleyball has instilled in these players will create a recipe for success in April.
For Sostek, this season is a beacon of opportunity. “I want to touch the hearts of a lot of people. I want to make an impact on all of the youngsters that are joining our ranks”. There is no denying that one of the most important parts of playing a high school sport is creating relationships that can transcend the bounds of each season. And with the environment that Sostek and his fellow teammates are creating on and off the court, these connections are bound to be made. Most importantly, he wants the team to continue to have fun regardless of their record. “For us, there is nowhere to go except for up. Our team is full of rising stars, and I can’t wait to see what we accomplish this year.”
This year’s season is just around the corner, and for Breck Boys Volleyball, the possibilities are endless. Stay tuned for an exciting few months of bumping, setting, and spiking!
