The freshman representatives are well underway with homecoming planning, fundraising, and other student council responsibilities with the rest of the Student Advocacy Council. However, how did the actual election process go? What did these new representatives promise? And what can we expect as a student body?
The freshman election, which took place last Wednesday, had over 13 candidates run and only 5 were elected. The new freshman reps. are Vivian Yang, Julia Zucchi, Janna Ali, Jack Pohlad, and Farrah Flamenbaum (pictured at bottom). All of their speeches were very interesting to say the least. One candidate promised a third lunch line, another said they should be voted in just because they were the best, and one candidate even joked about the class of 2029’s chaoticness. After speaking with them, here is what we can expect from these new representatives.
The election process was stressful for all of the candidates. Vivian Yang said, “It was both exciting and nerve wracking.” Even though it worked out for the 5 candidates we have now, there were others who ran that might disagree. One former candidate who wishes to stay anonymous said that they felt “good” while giving their speech and “not that nervous.” This person also went on to say that, “this entire thing is just a popularity contest, but I was just doing it for fun.” Others the Bugle has spoken to also think that the election results might not have aligned with what they wanted. After asking this particular candidate if they were happy with the representatives they said “no.” As stated by anonymous, “I think some of them definitely deserve it and some of them don’t. … Like some could actually do things for our school and some are there for the title.”
However, regardless of people’s feelings about the representatives, they still won. So what are they going to do now with that power? According to Janna Ali, the “future plans for the freshman class are to really just help our grade become more of a tight knit community, reaching out to others outside of our own friend groups.” That is also the overall consensus from the reps. who responded to our questions at the time of press. It mostly sounds like these representatives are focusing on the freshman class rather than the whole student body; sadly, this might mean no new third lunch line.
Julia Zucchi went on to say they will fulfill these goals by creating “a QR code that will be posted on Ms. Rivera’s wall so that anyone in the freshman class can share their ideas and feedback. Freshman Advocacy Council will receive the responses and use them to guide how we approach meetings, bringing in the ideas and concerns of our grade. We’ll also work together to plan the events based on the input we receive, making sure our activities bring the grade closer together.”
In conclusion, the student body as a whole does not need to expect any major changes, but the freshman class can get excited for high amounts of interaction between their representatives and themselves.
