The long awaited second season of Netflix-hit Wednesday was released in two parts: first on August 6th, and second on September 3rd. The month in between the two release dates had me dying to know what Wednesday would get up to next. With reappearances of loved characters we saw in season one, as well as new ones, this season captivated me from the beginning. Part one had just the right amount of twists and turns to keep me interested, but not too confused. In the new season, Wednesday returns for her second year at Nevermore Academy, this time accompanied by her brother, Pugsley, and with that comes her second year of uncovering the grim secrets of Jericho county.
But, part two felt a bit convoluted. Wednesday is introduced to multiple new mysteries, including the looming murder of homicidal crows that seems to be out to get her, a newly acquired stalker, and her brother’s friendship with a zombie. Though I think that these puzzles are important plotlines in the new season, I’d argue that part two focuses on them a little too much. The second part of the series featured plots so intricately woven together that it became hard to follow. For example, Pugsley’s zombie storyline was threaded between the major plot points of the rest of the season, and I had to pay close attention so as not to lose track of his story. That said, there were also some very enjoyable parts of the new season. The most shocking part has to have been seeing Lady Gaga in episode 6 of this season. Another piece of the new season that caught my eye was the way that Wednesday and her vibrant best friend Enid’s relationship has begun to frey. Wednesday, although well-intentioned, is not the kindest or most loving friend, even when she’s trying to protect Enid, and it was interesting to see the pair work through that. I thought that the focus on their friendship was a nice refresh from the dark twists of the Nevermore thread.
Overall, I found the newest season of Wednesday enticing, spooky, dramatic, and full of woe. As winding as the tale was, it was nothing like what you would expect, and that made it all the more entertaining.
