The Upper School musical Monty Python’s Spamalot opened on Thursday, November 18th, leaving the audience laughing and clapping along to the humorous songs. The story follows King Arthur, played by Calvin Ansari (‘23), on his quest to find the holy grail. He is accompanied by Patsy, played by Sarah Feng (‘23), and his knights of the round table played by James Hicks (‘23), Logan Schuneman (‘23), Christian Young (‘23), and Daniel Untiedt (‘24). Kennedy Lucas (‘23) gave an astonishing performance as Lady of the Lake, hitting high notes that I did not think were possible. The result is a comical story that is self-aware and not afraid to break the fourth wall. 

I didn’t really know what to expect going into the show as many cast and crew members had been out sick just a couple of days before. However, the cast and crew pulled through and delivered an amusing performance that left the audience laughing. The plot was a little hard to follow, but considering the chaotic nature of the story, I’m guessing that was the point. 

On their search for the holy grail, King Arthur and his knights meet many different creatures, including the Knights of Ni, Prince Herbert (Vladimir Tsiper ‘25), and Tim the Enchanter (Vivian Kalla ‘23). Each character added their own comedic style and unique accent to the show. Some notable scenes include “You Can’t Succeed on Broadway,” “His name is Lancelot,” and “Knights of the Round Table,” which featured an impressive tap dance solo from Sarah Feng. The best moments were when the ensemble was on stage because everyone played really well off of each other, especially James Hicks and Logan Schuneman. 

Although their run was cut short, the cast and crew of Monty Python’s Spamalot received positive reviews. In the meantime, get ready for the winter play Cyrano as auditions are on November 30th. Great job to the cast and crew of Spamalot!
