We talked to some of the captains of our winter sports teams. As their seasons build up towards sections and state, we asked their thoughts on how the year has gone so far and what might lie ahead. According to the girls hockey captain, Emerson Milchman (‘24), the 2022-23 hockey season has “been a challenge, but we’re on an uphill. We’re getting better.” When we asked Emerson what she was excited for, she replied that she was looking forward to playing more games with her team and more specifically their rematch against Blake. Emerson is confident in her team’s future and hopes they will “play more consistently and persevere through sections even though there are a lot of good teams.” Regardless of the outcome, they are optimistic for the rest of the season!

We also interviewed the nordic skiing captain, Lilia Yorkhall (‘24), on how their season has gone so far this year. She said the season is “going good.” They’ve had a few meets and she says “some of our skiers place pretty high, but mostly have really high team spirit.” Coming up, they will compete in conference and section meets, which Lilia mentioned was “exciting, even though we have to miss school”. Lilia’s goals for the rest of the season are “having fun, getting the underclassmen-upperclassmen relationships closer, and just being excited.” In short, the Breck nordic skiing team is looking forward to a great second half of the season. 

The girls gymnastics team is also hopeful for the rest of their season. We talked with the captain Sarah Fishbein (‘23) and Lucy Thomson (‘24). Overall, Sarah and Lucy said that their season has been “good” so far. Their meets haven’t always had the outcomes they wanted, but granted that they have all been against big schools, they both agreed that they played “really well”. Coming up, they are excited for the ‘Luau’ invite because they are “defending champs!” Since they don’t have a conference, the biggest goal in their season is to “beat Mahtomedi during sections.” Breck students go and support the girls gymnastics team at their next home meet on February 4th!

Coming off big wins against Blake, Saint Paul Academy, and Chisholm, the boys basketball team is starting off the season very well. After speaking with one of the captains, Will Walker III (‘23), their season so far has been “pretty good”. Overall, he’s proud of how well “everyone has been stepping up” given that they have several new players and coaches. With that being said, the team is “still figuring out some chemistry things but hoping to get more wins”. Looking ahead at the rest of the season, Will mentioned how he is excited about the big rivalry game against Minnehaha, senior night, sections and continuing to build connections with his teammates both on and off the court. When we asked him what his goals are for the rest of the season, Will said “obviously to win as many games as possible, but also before I graduate, to give lessons that I’ve received to underclassmen to make sure the program keeps going for years to come.” For the rest of the season, Will hopes that they continue to build strong leaders throughout the whole team and give it their all going into the postseason.
