Ja Morant and the Effects of Social Media
Many of you may know of the recent Ja Morant social media incidents, and although you might think this is a rare thing happening to him, these situations aren’t as uncommon as you might think. On March 3rd 2023, Ja’s first incident happened where he flashed the gun he had on him in a Denver nightclub where there were videos of him flashing the gun around. He was then suspended for 8 games after the incident and took a “break” from social media, which he then redownloaded it all back March 21st. Then once again on May 15, 2023 he made another stupid decision to show and flex his gun out on his friends Instagram live. The NBA took note and they took action–Morant is currently suspended from the team until further notice.
This isn’t the only case of these typesofthings in sports, there have been hundreds and thousands of other athletes around the world that have either gotten expelled from their collegiate schools or had their scholarships taken away and ruined their entire careers. It’s also not even just athletes, celebrities have also had these types of scenarios happen to them which starts the downfall of their careers. Mistakes like these aren’t the only negative side of social media though, one could say it’s not even the worst part about these corrupt and productivity- killing websites.
Mental health is the worst part of it all, and according to The University of Utah, 65% of adults 25-44 years old say that using social media has harmed their mental health severely. Since it’s becoming such a norm in our modern world, depressionrates will likely keep going up. Depression is linked to social media because of the fake and misleading content that people post, which either makes people jealous and/or causes them to compare themselves toothers thinking they don’t live up to standards. Even though it’s used by 60% of the world, according to the University of Maine, media harms more than it benefits our society. Yes, you can talk to your friends and stay up to date on news but it’s become such a place where most of the content you see is most likely biased and misleading. Studies from USC show that 75% of people don’t trust the content of social media.
So be careful next time and think before you post
